Perched on its rocky spur, Culan Castle overlooks the clear waters of the Arnon and its verdant valley. Erected in the 12 century, it combines a medieval style, exemplified by the remains of the ramparts, with Renaissance architectural elements like mullioned windows. Admire its imposing façade featuring round towers with wooden hoardings on top: it is one of only a few fortresses to have kept this type of layout. Step inside to contemplate the immense 15th-century fireplaces along with the impressive collection of Aubusson tapestries and 18th-century furniture.
Downhill from the castle, you can take a walk in the medieval gardens. To get there, you follow a path cut in the rock, lined with aromatic plants. You will reach the banks of the Arnon, surrounded by stunning greenery. Rose bushes in arcades, box trees and all kinds of medicinal plants grow on the site alongside a hedge maze, a kitchen garden and a sumptuous array of old roses.
Don't miss the annual Festiviales event at the château: shows, activities and exhibitions are organised on the theme of the medieval world.
