The locality of La Chapelle-d'Angillon boasts several of Berry's historical treasures, particularly in the field of literature. It was home to the celebrated author Alain-Fournier, who wrote the famous novel Le Grand Meaulnes.
You can learn about the background to his works at the house in the village where the author was born. The interior of the property, which you can visit on request, seems to have preserved the artist's soul: you can see the bed where he was born and a vast range of items that belonged to him.
In addition, the Alain-Fournier Museum tells us more about his work and travels. It is based within La Chapelle-d'Angillon Castle. This rare piece of architecture is one of the oldest military structures in the department. Fortified in the 11th century by Gillon de Seuly, the feudal castle is eye-catching with its imposing round towers and a keep overlooking a lake. A guided tour is regularly conducted by its owner, Count Jean d'Ogny, so enquiring minds can hear the story of the princes and lords of Boisbelle: a totally independent principality that was once established within the Cher area!
