The oldest municipal museum in the capital, the Carnavalet Museum is a beautiful exhibition space all about the history of Paris, from its origins to the present day. Located at the heart of the Marais in the 3rd arrondissement, it contains some exceptional collections, including archaeological remains, French Revolution memorabilia, scale models of monuments, paintings, sculptures and art objects. Inaugurated in 1880, the museum nowadays occupies two magnificent mansions, the Carnavalet Mansion and the Le Peletier de Saint-Fargeau Mansion, connected together by a gallery.

While the collections are fascinating, the setting is also very interesting. Indeed, the exhibits are displayed in rooms that aim to recreate the atmosphere of Parisian residences from the 15th to the 19th century. There are also regular temporary exhibitions about the capital and its history.

Today there are two branches of the Carnavalet Museum in Paris, where you can discover other aspects of the city: the Paris catacombs with their countless bones, and the archaeological crypt of Notre-Dame's forecourt, where relics from Antiquity to the 19th century are on display.
