In the Pas-de-Calais department, more precisely in Calais, there is a tradition that dates back to the end of the 18th century. This tradition is lace, and its reputation has since spread far beyond the borders of France. At that time, tulle manufacturers from Nottingham in England left their home region, which was in the grip of an economic crisis, and relocated to Calais in particular. They then adapted their production process to the Jacquard system, and lace was born.
The International City of Lace and Fashion charts the development of lace techniques in Calais. As this attraction is based in a 19th-century lace factory, you can see remarkable collection pieces as well as high fashion and lingerie creations. You can also watch the weaving looms, machines of gigantic dimensions, in operation.
