The blackcurrant - Tourism in the Côte-d'Or

The blackcurrant, a shrub about one metre high, is often situated near vineyards. It is mainly located in the sector going from Hautes Côtes to the plain of Côte de Nuits. The blackcurrant is sought after in numerous fields including healthcare, because of its beneficial effects, and the perfume industry, where the blackcurrant bud is an essential ingredient in some of the most famous fragrances. The blackcurrant is also used in numerous culinary preparations.

Crème de cassis (blackcurrant liqueur) from Dijon appeared in the middle of the 19th century. Today it is a key speciality of the town. The label "Cassis de Dijon" guarantees the origin of the fruit. Kir, a famous aperitif, requires 1/3 of blackcurrant liqueur and 2/3 of white aligoté wine. To find out more about it, Cassissium, situated in Nuits-Saint-Georges, is entirely devoted to the blackcurrant and explain its origin, history and numerous properties. This place is also a production site for blackcurrant liqueurs and brandies.
