Nestling At the heart of the Vermillion Coast, at the foot of the famous terraced vineyard, the delightful seaside town of Banyuls-sur-Mer, home town of the sculptor Aristide Maillol, offers its visitors and holidaymakers a marvellous range of things to explore. With its seafront esplanade, dotted with palm trees, the sandy and pebbly beaches, the marina, thalassotherapy institute, wine cellars, and also the aquarium of the Arago Laboratory, which displays Mediterranean fauna, the underwater path of the marine nature reserve of Cerbère-Banyuls, and the Mediterranean garden of Mas de la Serre, Banyuls-sur-Mer really provides a wide range of attractions!

The Maillol museum is found a few kilometres from the town centre, on the former smallholding of the artist. It pays homage to the famous Catalonian sculptor with a substantial collection of sculptures. His tomb rests in the garden near "La Méditerranée", a statue sculpted by Aristide Maillol.

Banyuls-sur-Mer

Nestled in the heart of the Pyrenees, a beach, a port, vineyards: that's what you discover when arriving at Banyuls-sur-Mer. Your curiosity will then push you in the alleys of Cap d'Osne then a little further to Puig del Mas, an old Roman oppidum where the spirit of the village remains most alive. Beyond, to the Col de Banyuls, extend the vineyards. It is on this terroir that this noble and rare wine is born which bears the name of "Banyuls". Your walk in the hinterland will take you through the plantations of mimosas, olive trees, prickly pears, to the Maillol Museum where are preserved works of the great artist. You will then walk on the seafront which will take you to the port. At the same time picturesque port of fishing and pleasure, skirted by Allées Maillol, it is animated by the artists' studios and the Biodiversarium which knew a major advance in 2017 with the opening of its new aquarium. Sea trips and scuba diving will take you to discover cliffs and caves, an exceptional flora and fauna, a unique nature reserve. In the evening, enjoy the inevitable aperitif on the terrace of a cafe, to the sound of the Sardana.
