In Northern Alsace, two villages keep the pottery tradition alive.

In Soufflenheim, in the Northern Ried, the art of pottery dates back to the second millennium B.C. and contributed to the spreading of Alsace's culinary tradition. The village is known for its culinary pottery with floral decorations, made from local clay of exceptionally high quality. Traditional potters continue to use it, passing their ancestral skill on down the generations. Soufflenheim is where kougelhopf moulds, baeckeoffe terrines and plates with typical Alsatian decorations are manufactured.

The second, Betschdorf, has been known since the 18th century for its artisanal pottery made using the salt-glazed sandstone technique. This method gives the pottery a slightly grainy aspect in grey shades with typical cobalt blue decorations. Betschdorf Pottery Museum, based in a superb half-timbered house, exhibits a rich collection of stoneware pottery while telling the story of this art, with pieces from the 18th and 19th centuries. It also offers a reconstruction of a pottery workshop along with a video projection showing the steps involved in making a pot.

In August, a pottery and ceramics market takes place in Soufflenheim.
