Alésia - Tourism in the Côte-d'Or

It is at Alise-Sainte-Reine that was discovered a Gallo-Roman site Alésia. 52 years BC, this site was the place where the battle between Julius Ceasar and Vercingétorix took place. Lengthy archaeological searches uncovered a Gallo-Roman city at the top of the plateau. A wealth of remains were unearthed such as a basilica, theatre, temple, forum, houses and whole districts.

On the hill dominating the village of Alise-Sainte-Reine, an imposing statue of Vercingétorix was erected at the request of the emperor Napoleon III.

Alesia is also ...

An iconic statue. To commemorate the end and the success of the research undertaken at Alesia, Napoleon the third order the sculptor Aimé Millet a colossal statue of Vercingetorix. 6.60 meters high, the work sheet copper was erected in 1865. Its stone base 7 meters was designed by the architect Viollet-le-Duc.

And a Gallo-Roman site open for over 100 years!

After the defeat of Vercingetorix, the oppidum continues to be busy. A prosperous Gallo-Roman city thrives, in particular, the activity of craftsmen specialized in working with bronze. It was abandoned in the 5th century. Population can be estimated to be a few thousand people. Of this ancient city, there are only remnants highly leveled. They correspond to the foundations and underground structures monuments and homes built over several centuries.
