They say “when the wind blows at Saignon, tiles fly off in Avignon”: the Mistral can blow fiercely down from the mountains to the Mediterranean. This fairytale 11th-century village of 100 inhabitants lies deep in the Lubéron hills and lavanders fields; the auberge sits deep in Saignon, half hidden behind an ancient tree near the village statue-topped fountain. Delicious meals are served under this tree, or in a pretty terraced garden, glassed in for the winter months. The bedrooms are simple but truly charming, colourwashed walls, country pieces, no Tvs but l'occitane soaps in lovely bathrooms with Italian stone block stiles. In Blue, a huge fireplace and a stone terrace looking out onto the hills... Views some from of the rooms are breathless. A long fire burns on chilly days in the informal arched stone sitting area. Gerhard, the new, young owner, will be faithful to the spirit of this hotel, and is in love with his new surroundings. A secret, splendid place from which to visit the hill towns. Or if you are fit, rent a bike and follow the cycling signs. Outstanding value.
