Itinerary

Continue left and after a steep climb you will arrive at a crossroads at a mountain pass leading to the valley and the hamlet of Otikoren.

Take the track that rises to the left of the mountain pass above the Otikoren valley. Once at the top of the slope in the forest, do not continue straight down, which is the return route.

Continue to climb up the path on the left. You will arrive at the flat summit of the hill. If you want to enjoy the view over the mountains of Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, take the path up on the left to the gate (abandoned bus in the hedge) - a good shady picnic site - and then retrace your footsteps.

Continue along the trail and leave it in front of a headland populated with grouse and veer left. The trail then arrives at a plateau covered with pastures and follows a barbed wire fence on the left. Further down on the left, on the back of the slope dominating the hamlet of Occos, you will find a recent plantation of grapevines, a sign of the dynamism of the Irouléguy vintage wine-makers. 200 m further on, watch out for a path at a flat area covered with grouse: leave the main path and take the path on the left to Occos.

Turn right at on to a grassy path not very visible on the way into the village, which winds down to the bottom of the valley you saw from the summit. Make your way to an old barn and cross over to the opposite side of Occostey. At the bottom, you will arrive at a newly built house: leave the road that leads down on the left to the bottom of the Baïgorry valley.

Turn right on to a flat path lined by a wall. You will arrive at the road between the hamlet of Otikoren and Irouléguy via the mountain pass crossed at the start of the itinerary.

Instead of following the road, turn right on to a trail which gradually climbs up the northern side of Occostey Hill: it is one of the "Chemins du Génie". Make your way to the top of the cliff which completes the loop.

Return to Irouléguy by taking the path down on the left to the road you started out on at the entrance to the village.
