Itinerary

At No.1 Place de l'Hôtel de Ville stands the Renaissance building of the old Butchers' corporation, the Metzig (1583). Behind the building is Ruelle de l'église, which, on the left, leads to the neo-Classical style courthouse and the neo-Gothic style Notre Dame chapel. Continue along Rue Notre Dame and discover the imposing church of the Jesuits (1615). It is one of the largest churches in Alsace and was completed in barely 2 years and 9 months in a Gothic style. On Place de l'église, the discreet Mont des Oliviers is an element from the old Charterhouse. Next to it is Oberkirch castle, a very beautiful private mansion. On Rue de la Monnaie, on your left, you will find the Hôtel de la Monnaie, the former coin workshop, and then Quincaillerie Coulaux. When you arrive at Place de la Liberté, take Rue Saint-Georges on the left. At the end of the street, turn left and cross Place du Marché and admire the tithe barn and its Piéta incrusted in the wall. Then turn right on to Rue de la Chartreuse, which goes around the old Charterhouse (1598-1791), the present-day municipal museum which is also home to the Bugatti Foundation. Cross the Cour des Chartreux and turn right on to Rue de l'Hôpital. At the end of the street, you will find the Poudrière, where weapons and ammunition used to be stored. On the left, Rue des Vosges leads to the Protestant temple (neo-Renaissance). On the right, the Porte des Forgerons gate (14th century) and, on the left, Rue de Strasbourg leads back to Place de l'Hôtel de Ville.
