The highly-regarded wines from the Orleans and Gien areas can be red, white or rosé and there are three with AOC status: wines from Orleans, Orléans-Cléry and Coteaux-du-Giennois. Wine production started in the Orleans and Gien areas as early as the 6th century, with monks from the Abbey of StMesmininMicy.
In general, Orleans white wine is made from grape varieties such as Chardonnay or Pinot Gris, and the reds and rosés from Pinot Meunier. They have a highly-valued fruity taste.
Coteaux-du-Giennois wines, for their part, come from Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir or Gamay vines. The white wines are light, with mineral and fruity notes, while the reds, fruity and low in tannin, have a very beautiful ruby colour. The slightly peppery notes of the rosés are also very popular.
A festival to celebrate sweet wines is traditionally held over several days in September at La Chapelle-Saint-Mesmin. You can help with the grape harvest as well as enjoying the festivities!
