The Metz ball (boulet de Metz) was invented by a pastry chef from Metz in 1934, Léon Bohr. He wanted to make a sweetmeat which would remind people of a cannonball, in reference to a famous inter-war song about an artilleryman from Metz.
It is a big round ball composed of a thin layer of chocolate and toasted hazelnut chips over caramel, which covers a delicious almond paste on a biscuit filled with ganache. This sweetmeat is a real treat in the afternoon with a cup of coffee or tea, according to taste.
