It's hard not to notice the caramels of Isigny-sur-Mer when visiting Calvados. This milk toffee is indeed one of the region's most notable specialities! Invented in 1889 by Mr Dupont, this sweet has been loved all around the world ever since.
The factory, which is open to visitors, has been world-famous for its dairy products since the 18th century, but its reputation was established by the Isigny caramels. Chewy or soft, these toffees are made with PDO Isigny butter and Isigny whole milk, sugar, salt, and PGI Guérande salt. Today, these little treats are available in various flavours as well as salted butter, such as hazelnut or calvados.
Visitors can take a tour of the workshops, which produce around 300 tonnes of caramels per year, before sampling a few, which all gourmets are sure to enjoy!
