The PGI-certified Haut-Poitou melon, of the Charentais Yellow Canteloupe type, is grown on clay-limestone soil by about fifteen producers in the area. Although the melon came to France in the 15th century, it was not until the 19th century that its cultivation began in Haut-Poitou.

Harvested manually from 1 July to 30 September, Haut-Poitou melons have orange flesh and are very sweet, with an intense, delightful aroma. Juicy with a melt-in-the-mouth texture, it can be eaten with an aperitif, as a starter, with dry-cured ham, with port or Pineau des Charentes wine, in salad or for dessert.

With a high vitamin and mineral content, Haut-Poitou melon is marvellous for the health. Also, as it is very low in calories, it is good for slimmers, and because it is full of water it can be used to keep well-hydrated in the hot summer weather.
