Marseille International Film Festival, also known as FID Marseille, takes place every year in early July over a period of six days. Each year, over 200 films from around thirty different countries are shown, most of them for the first time. Initially devoted to documentaries, the festival has gradually expanded to include fictional and art films. Since 2015, the official selection has also included fictional films alongside the documentaries.
The programme is arranged around three competitions, one international, one French and one for debut films. A total of 35 feature and medium-length films enter the competition. The screenings are open to professionals and the public at cinemas, theatres, art galleries and outdoor amphitheatres in the city of Marseille. The FID also offers retrospectives devoted to filmmakers and special sessions to discover or rediscover great classics and cinematic gems.
Each year, the festival welcomes around 500 film professionals and attracts over 20,000 spectators.
