Small coastal town of the Dunes of Flanders, in the North, Zuydcoote takes place on the shores of the North Sea, at the gates of Dunkirk. It is located not far from the seaside resort of Bray-Dunes, near the Belgian border.

Founded in Roman times, the municipality of Zuydcoote has developed around its maritime activities, in particular cod fishing in Iceland in the 18th century, suffering over the centuries from numerous natural damages which have made it increasingly strong. Heavily affected during the Second World War due to the organization of Operation Dynamo in 1940, Zuydcoote experienced a major reconstruction campaign in the second half of the 20th century, all the same retaining its natural charm and dynamism.

Things to see and do

It is mainly for its natural heritage and its ideal location for exploring the most beautiful towns in the region that Zuydcoote is appreciated by visitors. In particular, you can browse its dunes which offer a breathtaking view of the North Sea. Over a hundred hectares, the Marchand dune offers a beautiful flora diversity, like the Dewulf dune which is an integral part of maritime Flanders. This dune massif stretches over 2.5 km and over 200 hectares, ideal for walks with family or friends. Property of the Coastal Space and Lake Shores Conservatory, the fossil dune of Ghyvelde is also worth a detour.

Built at the end of the 1950s, the Saint-Nicolas church takes place on the remains of an old 14th century building completely destroyed by the German army in 1944. Entirely in cinder block and concrete, the building reveals a roof in tile and a steeple attached to a corner of the facade. Inside, it is possible to admire a very beautiful ceramic Stations of the Cross made by the workshops of Saint-Paul de Wisques abbey.

Created in 1922, the national necropolis of Zuydcoote brings together French, German, British and Belgian soldiers from the First World War. In 1953, a square of military casualties from World War II was added to it.

Today occupied by departmental guards, the North Farm was built in the 1910s for the sanatorium. A unique example of a French industrial farm, it was then used to meet the food needs of the employees and patients of the sanatorium. Infirmary of the Navy in 1940, the site still has beautiful brick buildings.
