Bourg du Grand Ried in the heart of the plain of Alsace, equal distance between Saint-Louis and Wissembourg, Wittisheim is located 10 km east of Sélestat and a few kilometers from the Rhine.
The region of Grand Ried is bordered on both sides by the Ill and the Rhine, over an area of about 200 km².
The Ried is a wetland regularly flooded in autumn and snowmelt by overflowing streams such as Ill.
In a few hundred meters, the walker passes from dense forest to meadows filled with light, encounters a great variety of trees, rare flowers, aquatic plants and can observe a host of animals: insects, birds, mammals... Some, threatened with extinction, now enjoy protection measures at European level.
This wetland attracts birds such as the Ash Curlew, a symbolic bird of the Ried, where they find their last nesting sites. Other common species are found here: the gray heron, the stork, the hare, the deer or the deer.
