Listed as one of the Most Beautiful Villages of France, Vouvant possesses a magnificent Romanesque church with a richly carved portal. The ramparts, the postern, the ancient bridge spanning the river and the Mélusine tower - the remains of an old castle that, according to legend, was built in one night by the fairy Mélusine - contribute to the charm of this small town.

From the top of the Mélusine tower, walkers can appreciate a beautiful view of the surrounding countryside, in particular of Mervent-Vouvant forest. The story of the Mélusine fairy is told at Maison Mélusine.

Additional information
Vouvant

A small city of character with subtle charm, Vouvant has preserved the best of its long history: an architectural heritage of a seductive harmony.

The charm of the medieval city, enclosed in its ramparts, nestled in the hollow of a ring of river comes as much of its medieval vestiges, its splendid church whose portal is an example in term of Romanesque architecture that of its narrow Flowery streets. Closed in a meander of the Mother, whose buissonnier course enlivens a smiling valley, the ancient medieval fortress no longer defends, from the top of its rocky mound, only the point of view of the tourist. This picturesque village is full of piety and legends, to the extent that its prestigious Romanesque church of the eleventh century seems to continue an age-old dialogue with the old donjon, built one night by the fairy Melusine. Classified as a historical monument, the church has a remarkable portal with columns, surmounted by superb sculpted archs. Narrow streets, lined with houses with varied styles, express the sweetness of living in this small city. At the edge of the village, the vast state forest of Vouvant-Mervent composes to him the most beautiful of finery and brings to the numerous visitors an additional increase of pleasure and discoveries.
