The Church of St. Martin de Volonne, locality situated 13 km southeast of Sisteron, in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, was built in the eleventh century, and then depended on the powerful abbey of St. Victor Marseille.
It is unusual to have a basilica, which is rare in the region: there are a nave of five bays, with two aisles of the same length, which lead to an apse and two apses.
Pre-Romanesque style, built with local materials (limestone, sandstone and pebbles collected in the course of the Durance), the church was burned down during the Wars of Religion, restored as early as 1604 and almost abandoned in the nineteenth century a new disaster.
Protected as historical monuments since 1971, the church is the subject of a restoration campaign to highlight the richest elements of its architecture as its western façade with oculi and twin windows that overcomes steeple.
The front "south" for its part has an arched gate and five high windows.
Inside, the original pavement has disappeared, as the wood frame.
A building of interest that may stake a walk in this authentic village.
