Small village of Ain, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, Virieu-le-Grand takes place at one hour from Lyon and Bourg-en-Bresse, not far from the ski slopes of Plans Hotonnes and the Plateau d'Hauteville.
The presence of many sources and its location at the crossroads of different traffic routes have allowed Virieu-le-Grand to gain some importance in the Gallo-Roman era. Under the domination of Savoy from the eleventh century, the town was renowned in the Middle Ages for its tanneries and leather. Having become French at the beginning of the 17th century, she remained in history for having welcomed the writer Honoré d'Urfé, notably during the writing of his famous novel, Astrée.
Even today, Virieu-le-Grand is a village appreciated for its preserved charm, its hiking trails, as well as for its architectural heritage.
