In the heart of the village, below the castle, the magnificent 17th-century covered market hall host a market every Saturday.

Located in the department of Charente, the small village of Villebois-Lavalette takes place twenty kilometers of Angoulême, at the foot of the Périgord. Situated on a fortified hill, about fifty kilometers from Perigueux, the site is ideally located for exploring this part of southern France.

Green and pleasant, the site would take its name from the Latin term villa Bovis, an ancient Gallo-Roman domain. The village was indeed populated at that time as shown by the marble remains found during archaeological excavations. important barony in the Middle Ages, Villebois-Lavalette is today known for its wine business, as well as its tourism. Some interesting monuments reveal indeed the past splendours of a rich and fascinating history.

Most lovers will appreciate the specialty of the village and its surroundings, the famous cornuelle Charentais, a dish tasted for Palm cake.

Things to see and do

Tourism, the small village of Villebois-Lavalette celebrates its architectural heritage to attract visitors passing.

Villebois-Lavalette is primarily a castle. Built on an old Gallo-Roman, it was built in the tenth century before being fortified in the thirteenth century by the famous family of Lusignan. A princely house was also added in 1665, destroying part of the fortress. Today, one can still admire the walls, or a beautiful Romanesque chapel on two floors, the first floor was once used to accommodate the pilgrims. The entire castle and its buildings have been classified as an historic monument.

Built in the thirteenth century and restored in the nineteenth century, the Saint-Romain takes place next to the castle, overlooking the village and its halls. With its impressive staircase dating from the late nineteenth century, it is listed as an historic monument.

Classified as an historic monument, the halls date from the seventeenth century. They welcome today the village market. Those originally dated for their twelfth century. The beautiful wood frame and the sundial of the seventeenth century, are also their charm.

Walking through Villebois-Lavalette, visitors will also discover the house of the Seneschal, the fifteenth century, that once belonged to the area tax attorney.

The market is held every Saturday morning.

Every year at the time of the Palms, the village holds its festival cornuelles. For the occasion, this little flat cake cocked is tasted in large numbers.
