The Country Vienna, consisting of 18 surrounding municipalities and one city of 66,000 inhabitants, the seat of both sides of the river Rhone, south of Lyon.

This territory occupies a privileged location in the Rhone-Alpes. Indeed, it opens easily to the east of the Alps and the Jura, and has southern influences of Drome and Ardeche. Crossed by the motorway A7, there is the essential first step and true gateway to the southern sun ...

In addition, the city of Vienne enjoys a strategic crossroads, near the main roads of North / South and East / West. It is so close to large cities such as Lyon (20 min), Valencia (45 mins), Saint-Etienne (45 min), Grenoble (1h).

Labeled "City of Art and History" since 1990 by the Ministry of Culture and Communication, City Vienne shares with its visitors the richness of its heritage and quality of life.

The Roman Empire (I BC to 3rd AD) is the glory and richness of Vienne. This time, the city has an archaeological heritage among the richest in France highlighted the Archaeological Museum of Saint-Romain-en-Gal/Vienne.

  • Ancient Theater:
  • From the late 18th century, early observations allowed to identify some remains ... But it was not until the early 20th century that revived after massive trenching and restoration, a beautiful chamber, leaning against the hill wide open and the Pipet on the city. Equivalent to old theaters that can be seen in Rome and throughout the Roman West, the 46 steps could accommodate 13,000 people. The notables of the city were entitled to home plate in the front rows of the "orchestra".
  • A visit to the theater is a must as this vast building is impressive in the heart of the city. True to its original purpose, it serves as a backdrop to the Festival International Jazz Vienne which takes place every year, the first half of July.
  • Temple of Rome and Augustus:
  • More commonly known as "Temple of Augustus and Livia" (Livia, second wife of Emperor Augustus), the monument rises abruptly to a place of historical center, now, with its outdoor cafes, a place of conviviality and relaxation.
  • Built around the year 30 or 20 BC, he belonged to the monumental forum Vienne. Restoration work undertaken at the instigation of Merimee, removed the changes he had experienced during its history: church since the early Middle Ages, museum and library in the early 19th century.
  • Church and convent of St. Andrew the Netherlands:
  • These two buildings were part of a rich and powerful abbey, founded in the 6th century. Chapel of the palace of King Boson, in the late 9th century, the church was rebuilt in the 11th and 12th centuries.
  • With its semicircular apse flanked by massive columns and ancient capitals reused, an unfinished nave to the west, it is remarkable for its sculptural decoration of the Romanesque style. The Cloister (twelfth century) is also richly decorated with columns and carved capitals where we find the influence of ancient art.
  • Cybele Garden: The garden, built in the center of the city, which retains an archaeological interpretation by specialists is still controversial. A note however: a double arcade which belonged to the end of a portico on the eastern side of the forum, a tiered building (auditorium style) which remains a magnificent limestone high wall of large equipment, the remnants of homes and of terracing.
  • Roman Road: Located in the city garden. This paved urban thoroughfare, near which stands a milestone symbolizes the commercial importance of the ancient city.
  • Pyramid: The monument which stands at over 20 meters high, stood in central circus (place reserved for chariot races) as the obelisks found in other comparable circuses of the Roman world. Its location on a platform axial (spina) was confirmed by excavations in the 19th century and the beginning of next. But before any evidence demonstrating the true nature of this building, in the popular imagination had taken hold: some wanted to make a tomb, a cenotaph other (sometimes that of an Emperor - Augustus, Alexander Severus , ... - sometimes that of Pontius Pilate - Prefect of Judea that several medieval legends bind Vienne).
  • Primatial Cathedral Saint-Maurice:
  • With an episcopal see at the end of the third century, the Christian community set in the same place, since the 4th century, the site of his cathedral.
  • The current building, built between the late 11th century and early 16th century, presents the remarkable harmony of a Romanesque building included in a Gothic cathedral longer. His boss, Saint Maurice, a soldier of the Roman armies was martyred in Switzerland (late 3rd century). Imposing facade with three portals and arches with richly carved spandrels.
  • Inside, the Romanesque arches and the aisles have retained their Romanesque (biblical scenes, floral motifs), a carved Zodiac, which reflect the quality of Romanesque sculpture, and a coherent iconographic program.
  • Open daily. Free admission.
  • Museum of Fine Arts and Archeology:
  • Memory of the museums of the late 19th century, it contains in its halls collections sometimes unexpected: Treasury of Roman silver tableware (third century), bronze statue of a Roman knight born Vienne, lead pipes with their brands manufacturers (Roman), stories of everyday life to Vienne at the end of the Gallic period ... and closer to us, beautiful earthenware of the 18th century.
  • Open daily except Monday.
  • Archaeological Museum - St. Peter's Church: This church is one of the oldest in France (fifth-sixth centuries). Its original state it has kept its nave basilica plan and a robust, to which is attached a bell tower in the 12th century. It shelters since the 19th century an archaeological museum: Gallo-Roman sculptures including the famous Tutela, mosaics, monuments and gravestones of Roman times ...
  • It is pleasant to stroll in the historic center (tourist route Vienne Urban Faces), where the remains of the past are combined with an active commercial life and a cultural activity that summarizes the International Jazz Festival. As for the rooms of the Romanesque cloister (monastery and church of St. Andrew the Netherlands), they host throughout the year, exhibitions of visual arts, contemporary photography, archeology.
  • Vienne between hills and Rhone: The Rhone has always played a major role in the history of Vienne in industry, transport, but also in the lives of people ... Today, numerous water sports can be practiced on the river jousting, water skiing, boating, rowing, model.
  • You have to climb the heights Pipet (Mont Pipet) to admire the natural view from a beautiful view over the city, the Rhone in full majesty that is celebrated every year (the Feast of the Rhone), the hills covered with vineyards prestigious (Cote Rotie, Condrieu, Sotanum ...), the Roman theater and on the other bank of the river, south, nestled in a natural park, the Pilat (guidebook hikes to the Office of Tourism).
  • Vienne enjoying a river stop, many cruises from Lyon or Martigues, calling at Vienne to allow a city tour and the Vienne region. Mini-cruises (from 1 hour to 1 day) and dinner cruises are offered.
  • From Vienne, at the car park near the Tourist Office Vienne and the Vienne region (across from the pier), cruises or cruises walk meals are available. Over the Rhone, come watch the hills to the famous vineyards (Côte Rôtie, Condrieu, St. Joseph) and admire the castle Ampuis.

  • The Museum of Saint-Romain-en-Gal/Vienne:
  • In 1967 the city of Vienne undertook the initial work to build a school in Saint-Romain-en-Gal, a municipality on the right bank of the Rhone. The excavators came up against, as predicted, archaeologists, on the remains of the Gallo-Roman. It was then intelligently decided to defer construction of the school a little further west in order to save what turned out to be, as and when excavations, one of the largest and most comprehensive testimonies of architecture, daily life, urban planning and economic development of a Roman city between the 1st and 3rd centuries. Today the site is still in uncovering and studying the remains belonging to a large residential area of the ancient Vienne.
  • The visitor walks on the Roman roads and discover the large houses belonging to rich merchants. The most famous are the "home of the gods Oceans" and "home to five mosaics." The advantage of this route goes through the discovery of warehouses, the covered market, the hydraulic lines of lead, baths and latrines available to all and are remarkably preserved.
  • Since 1996 the museum has enriched the Saint-Romain-en-Gal. City Vienne are on deposit an exceptional collection of mosaics, art popular in the Gallo-Roman. The museum, built by architects Chaix and Morel, is made from transparencies. Large models will represent the ancient city on both sides of the river, warehouses and mansions of the merchants.

  • Castle Septeme
  • At the time of Ancient Rome was located at the site of the Septeme "seventh milestone of" the road connecting Vienne in Milan. A castle, whose ruins still stand today, was built during the 10th and 11th centuries this ancient Roman camp.
  • The ramparts. At the end of the 13th century, the city of Septème was fortified by the Counts of Savoy who built a wall along a kilometer, pierced with many loopholes. At that time, was a Septème issues of the age-old struggle that engaged the House of Savoy and the Dauphiné States for control of the region. The castle has its origins in a 12th century fortified house, enhanced later to become the current dungeon. During the 14th and 15th centuries other buildings were built around a courtyard which became the main square of the city. There is still an old prison and 60 m deep well water supply for the population in case of siege. In the sixteenth, under the influence of the Italian Renaissance, a gallery will be built with porches and loggias connecting two floors of the tower to the tower.
  • This castle is open to the public from April 1 to October 31, Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 14h to 18h.
  • Contact: +33 4 74 58 26 02.
  • The chapel of Saint Maxime, Chuzelles: Built around the year one thousand by the Benedictine monks of the abbey of Saint Andrew the Netherlands (in Vienne) on which it depended, it is one of the oldest chapels in the Vienne region.

  • On the heights of Vienne extend over twenty miles of rolling hills and wooded Pilat separated by the Rhone: it is the Viennese balmes. 16 family rides punctuated by craftsmen and producers with magnificent views over the plains of north-Dauphine.
  • Loops cyclists: These are 6 loops that borrow paved roads, mostly roads (low traffic), and which will pass through interesting sites on the topographic plan, landscape and tourism. Indeed, three loops will be connected to the future greenway cycle route which passes on the right bank of the Rhone, two loops pass near the island Barlet, two loops near the leisure des Roches de Condrieu. Moreover, the loops will miss some heritage sites of Vienne region (examples of castles and Chonas Septème). The loops have six levels of difficulty: the easiest loop is less than 20 km and 89 m elevation. The loop is the hardest nearly 120 km 1340 m elevation. The other 4 loops are 30 to 50 km. Finally, the six loops are staked, that is to say that there are directional signs at intersections to guide cyclists. This principle is identical to staking loops cyclo Rhone (eg loops cyclo Pilat).
