Listed as a Historic Monument, the Cordelle chapel, at Vézelay, was erected in the second half of the 12th century, following the preaching of Saint Bernard of Clairvaux for the Second Crusade. Dedicated to the Holy Cross, it takes its name from a reference to the cord of Franciscan monks.
Visited many times by Saint-Louis in the 13th century, the Cordelle chapel then saw the addition of a Saint-Fiacre priory managed by Italian Franciscans who remained there until the Revolution. In activity again since the mid-20th century, the site regularly welcomes pilgrims.
