Things to see and do

The commune of Vescovato has a rich religious heritage, starting with the Saint-Martin church. Built in the 14th century and altered many times, it reveals a very beautiful Romanesque architecture mixed with a more recent Baroque style. Built on the remains of a medieval chapel, it reveals in its basement a covered passage cut in the rock which led to the old stables of the monks. Inside, visitors can admire two works classified as Historical Monuments: a tabernacle of the high altar from the old cathedral of Mariana from the 15th century as well as a statue of Saint Anthony in painted wood from the 17th century.

During your wanderings in the town, you can also discover the Santa Croce brotherhood chapel, the former Capuchin convent with its chapel on a rocky outcrop with high altar and 18th century tabernacle listed as Historic Monuments. The San Mighele chapel is also worth a stop. This Pisan Romanesque building from the 11th century was converted into a family tomb in the Middle Ages.

Don't miss the Filippini house either, with its white marble overdoor from the 16th century, listed as a Historic Monument.

Vescovato is also known for its natural heritage, with several Natura 2000 or ZNIEFF classified areas such as the eastern hills of Castagniccia, the mouth of the Golo or the Mucchiatana.
