The small village of Vauvillers takes place in Haute-Saône, in the Burgundy-Franche-Comté region. Located in the arrondissement of Lure, not far from Jussey, it is at the gates of the Vosges and Lorraine.
Already present in Roman antiquity, the commune of Vauvillers was at the time located at a crossroads of several lanes. Divided into two territories, one Comtois and the other Lorraine, in the Middle Ages, it was united at the beginning of the XVIIIth century by the family of Clermont-Tonnerre. A former duchy-peerage, the village is today appreciated for its tourist activity, as well as for its architectural heritage of great interest.
Preserved, the authenticity of Vauvillers seduces passing visitors eager to discover an ancient and traditional architecture in this part of Franche-Comté.
Inscribed in the Historical Monuments, the house of Cardinal Adam Sommier reveals a beautiful Renaissance facade, including a turret of angle, as well as gargoyles. Also inscribed, the old wooden halls are also lacking interest. Built in the 18th century, they are the last of their kind still standing in Franche-Comté.
Built in the 18th century for the family of Clermont-Tonnerre, the castle of Vauvillers is also listed in Historical Monuments. It features, among others, a roof covered with multicolored glazed tiles, as well as a monumental staircase with wrought iron railing. Today, the building houses the City Hall of Vauvillers.
Also of the eighteenth century, the church Saint-Eloi is the work of Jean Querret. Inscribed in the Historical Monuments, it allows to admire in its interior a very beautiful Pietà, a triptych of the XVIth century, or even furniture dating from the XVIIIth century. Nearby, the presbytery, built in the 15th century, has been listed in the Historic Monuments. It has for a time welcomed the Hotel des Coins.
As you walk through Vauvillers, you will be able to appreciate the charm of the great fountain of the eighteenth century, or the crosses and calvaries of the nineteenth century scattered all over the commune. The old fortified house reveals very beautiful vaulted cellars, while you will appreciate the obelisk-shaped marker installed on the road to Polaincourt.
Surrounded by vast forests, the village of Vauvillers allows you to learn about outdoor activities such as hunting and hiking. Luckiest lovers will hear the deer slab once the autumn arrives.
