The Vercors Prehistory Museum is located in the town of Vassieux-en-Vercors, in the Drôme department, 15 km south of La Chapelle-en-Vercors.
It was built on a site housing a flint knapping workshop dating from -5000 BC and which was unearthed in 1970.
Renovated in 2008, managed by the Vercors Regional Nature Park, the he establishment built in wood aims to highlight the archaeological and scientific richness of the site but also to explain the major stages of prehistory.
Benefiting from a modern museography, visitors go back in time: thanks to the exhibits (minerals, tools, weapons, bones, etc.) and the documents presented, they discover the arrival of Neanderthals in the region, then the time of Cro-Magnon and finally, during the Neolithic era, the daily life of men and women who settled down as well as their rituals, in particular funerals.
The flint workshop, protected as historical monuments, has been preserved and remains visible, sheltered by a bay window.
Throughout the season, demonstrations (of flint knapping), workshops and conferences are programmed, with specific visits being offered for schoolchildren.
