Property of Saint-Gengoulph, constable of France under Pépin le Bref, in the eighth century, the town of Varennes-sur-Amance returned to his death in the family of Choiseul who has distinguished himself in the history of the country. A wealthy village because of its eighteenth-century national markets and fairs, Varennes-sur-Amance takes its current name in the mid-19th century.

Today, the village of Haute-Marne continues to attract visitors with its architectural heritage, as well as for its pleasant landscapes. Lively and dynamic, it also presents an important cultural and festive life.

Things to see and do

Built in the 13th century, the church of Varennes-sur-Amance is now listed as an historic monument. Rebuilt in the course of the nineteenth century, it has kept a nave of origin.

Also listed as an historic monument, Saint-Gengoulph Chapel dates from the 16th century. It was built by the prior of Varennes, François de Montarby, on the fountain associated with the history of the martyr. The latter still takes place in the center of the crypt.

While strolling in the village, do not miss to admire the Renaissance door of the XVIth century of the town hall, it is registered with the Historical Monuments.

The Garnier house is also worth a visit with its 16th century fireplace, listed as a historic monument.

To enjoy the local fauna and flora, head for the Bois du Chézeaux.
