Property of Saint-Gengoulph, constable of France under Pépin le Bref, in the eighth century, the town of Varennes-sur-Amance returned to his death in the family of Choiseul who has distinguished himself in the history of the country. A wealthy village because of its eighteenth-century national markets and fairs, Varennes-sur-Amance takes its current name in the mid-19th century.
