The winter sports resort of Valloire, in the town of the same name, in Savoie, 30 km south of Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne by road, is located between the Telegraph (1556 m) and Galibier (2642m).
The ski area overlooking the village is coupled with that of the neighboring town of Valmeinier, forming the Galibier-Thabor area. Ranging from 1430 to 2600 m in altitude, it has in terms of alpine skiing 85 runs (8 black, 31 red, 25 blue and 21 green totaling 160 km of descents), 70% of them being located at the above 2000 m. They are served by 29 ski lifts.
Although the resort has retained a "village" spirit, particularly appreciated by families, skiers also benefit from a preserved environment extending over five slopes, part of the area being wooded and dotted with hamlets.
The landscape that awaits skiers at the top of the Grand Plateau (2524 m altitude) on the Crey massif is particularly remarkable.
The resort has also given the name of the double world champion Jean-Baptiste Grange, a native of the region, to a track located on the Sétaz massif.
Enthusiasts of new and thrilling disciplines are also delighted with a number of dedicated areas at their disposal: boarder cross and snowpark in particular, as well as a unique course called the animal safari where you discover the area starting from in search of the five huge sound sculptures of wooden animals that evoke the legends of the Valloire valley…
In addition, three areas are reserved for beginner skiers and a ski touring track has been laid out.
Finally, the resort lends itself to the practice of snowshoeing.
Two ski schools provide introductory or advanced courses, the ESF and the ESI.
Famous for hosting international ice and snow sculpture competitions every year in mid-January, Valloire proves to be just as popular in summer. Hiking enthusiasts are delighted, as are cycling fans, who can take the Col du Galibier and the Col du Télégraphe, passes that have become legendary in the Tour de France cycle race.
