Standing proudly on a rocky promontory in the middle of the woods, the castle of Vallerois-le-Bois is intriguing with its square keep with battlements and its main building with sloping roofs. Built in the 12th century and greatly altered over the following centuries, the building was largely destroyed during the French Revolution at the end of the 18th century.
Restored in the 1960s by its then owner, it has been listed as a Historic Monument since 1964. It still has a gatehouse of which some vestiges of the 16th century remain, a farmyard with curtain walls or even a Great Court overlooking buildings transformed in the 16th century. Visitors will also be able to appreciate a Renaissance staircase turret from the 16th century and a keep from the 15th century.
Inside, the decor is different. Hall of justice with Gothic warheads, monumental twisted stone fireplace, library…
