Trizay-lès-Bonneval

Tourism, holidays & weekends guide in the Eure-et-Loir

Trizay-Lès-Bonneval is a small town (980 ha) 5 km from Bonneval. Located on the right bank of the Loir, it belongs to the Faux-Perche, an intermediate region between Beauce and Perche.

The meanders of the Ozanne, a tributary of the Loir which crosses the town from west to east, have shaped the landscape, forming a valley. The relatively low elevation of the course of the Ozanne, however, allowed the establishment of 4 water mills. Three are still visible. Outside the Bourg, there were no less than 14 localities inhabited in the middle of the 19th century. The occupation of the Ozanne valley is very old, as evidenced by the discovery of Palaeolithic bifaces. But it was the Neolithic era that provided the first known monuments such as the "La Pierre de Beaumont" dolmen, which is one of the most beautiful dolmens in the department, and the "Grosse Pierre". The formation of the parish is very old, as indicated by the dedication to Saint Martin (Patron Saint of the church), it could date back to the High Middle Ages. Two chapels complete the religious establishment at the beginning of the second millennium: the chapel of Saint Maxime (which will later become a priory) in the 12th century and the chapel of Frécot a century later of which some vestiges remain. The church is a building with reduced dimensions enlarged by a quarter by an adobe porch with half-timbering and which has here a role of "caquetoire". The porch houses a Romanesque portal from the end of the 12th century. A simple nave with a rounded chevet to which a small sacristy has been added on the left. The nave has a framed vault in the shape of an inverted hull with tie beams and punches. The choir is completely covered with woodwork, redone in 1788. A small wooden altarpiece contains between two columns a niche with the statue of Saint Martin above the main altar. It is surmounted by a small niche with a Virgin and Child, a polychrome statue. The patron of the parish of Saint Martin is represented twice at the high altar and in the nave by a polychrome statue of one meter twenty by seventy-five centimeters which has retained its polychromy. This statue after a complete restoration, which made it possible to find its original colors, found its place in the church in 2021.

Astride his steed, Saint Martin turns to the left backwards to offer half of his coat. It is a naive work of popular art, of great charm. An 18th century painting was originally under the porch, after restoration it found a new place in the church in the course of 2018. The title of the work is "Ananias imposing hands on Saint Paul" after Jean Restout 1692-1768, French painter of the Baroque period. The sacristy has the upper part of an old piece of furniture and a beautiful Louis XV wardrobe. Other furnishings include a beautiful 18th century lectern with an eagle with outstretched wings. The bell tower, which was already modest at the start, was redone and further lowered between 1920 and 1930.
