Trie-Château

Tourism, holidays & weekends guide in the Oise

Trie-Château is a town in the department of Oise, in the Hauts-de-France region, 28 km south-west of Beauvais.

In 2018, the locality merged with its neighbor Villers-sur-Trie, which became a simple hamlet. The whole of the new community now has an area of 13.3 km² and has nearly 2,000 inhabitants.

Bordering to the west of Gisors, which belongs to the Eure department, Trie-Château is part of the natural region of French Vexin, a vast cereal-growing plateau located between Île-de-France and Normandy.

In fact, after the founding of the Duchy of Normandy in 911, Trie-Château became a border town with France. The village will thus be fortified and will constitute a strategic point for centuries.

From this period, the small town has retained a heritage of interest, especially as peace returned under the Ancien Régime, the town prospered thanks to its agricultural land and was also "doped" by its owners, the families of Prince de Conti and Bourbon. Sources of mineral water flowing through fountains named after these glorious surnames also bear witness to this past!

Now, in addition to its heritage, Trie-Château has a leisure offer that adds to the interest of a visit...

Things to see and do

Trie-Château has a rich heritage including six sites and elements protected as historical monuments.

The oldest is the Trois Pierres dolmen, near the Bois de la Garenne, which dates from - 4000 BC. This vestige of a primitive human presence is in the form of a sepulchral chamber (although some of the megaliths have been scattered).

Then head for the center of the village to admire the Sainte-Madeleine church, listed in 1862, which combines several styles. The Romanesque nave from 1100 is preceded by an equally Romanesque narthex. However, the Gothic choir dates from the 13th century. Both the narthex and the old portal are decorated on the outside with rich decorations, those of the upper part having nevertheless been restored around 1860.

The narthex and the nave share the same frame with sandpit and decorations in the shape of human heads. Finally, the choir has retained its original vault.

We will then focus on the castle, property of the Dukes of Longueville then passed to the Bourbon-Conti. Note that the eleventh century tower (with an arched staircase) has been preserved from the original defensive building. Other elements (half-round towers, curtain wall) were incorporated into the 15th century repairs. Having benefited from changes, the complex where the philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau resided in 1767 and 1768 has today become the town hall. On the other hand, the new 17th century chateau was razed to the ground during the Revolution.

A sculpture perpetuating the memory of Rousseau's stay was inaugurated in 1911. The park and traces of old ditches surround the building. Information on +33 3 44 49 43 43.

Before joining the castle, the town hall was housed in the courtroom, in the historic center of the village. Built at the end of the 12th century, it is one of the rare Roman-style civil buildings that have been preserved in the region. The vaulted room on the ground floor was used for a time as a dungeon then housed fire pumps at the beginning of the 19th century… At this period, the campanile was added, restored in 1980.

A fortified gate from the 15th century, a vestige from the first enclosure of the fortress created when the city was on the border of Normandy, a surrounding tower (now a dwelling) at the level of the church square, still bear witness to Trie-Château's past.

A stroll in the village can finally include beautiful traditional half-timbered dwellings and in the close surroundings, the Sainte-Marguerite castle, a former maladrerie in the Middle Ages which underwent a complete restructuring at the beginning of the 19th century. The estate was then a private residence and then housed an agricultural training establishment.

In the hamlet of Villers-sur-Trie, let us mention the old parish church of Saint-Denis.

In terms of "nature" sports and recreation, in addition to the castle park which lends itself to relaxation and walking, many hiking or mountain biking tours are possible at the start of or including the town of Trie-Château. Some loops include forays to Gisors and Le Vexin (maps and information on +33 2 32 27 60 63) and others focus on the strictly Isarian countryside, so "on the Oise side" (maps and information on +33 3 64 60 60 60). It is also possible to join the outings of the local club, Evasion Vexin: contact +33 3 44 49 74 54.

In another register, the Aquavexin inter-municipal swimming pool meets different aspirations: its sports area includes a 25 m pool but it also has fun equipment (slide, wild river) and well-being (spas, hammam, etc.). Information on +33 3 44 22 06 44.

Finally, to combine relaxation and the outdoors, an 18-hole mini-golf course is located in Villers-sur-Trie: inquire at +33 3 44 49 61 99.
