This is an exceptional collection, which has asked eleven years of restoration work, bringing together a museum and a hospital Museum of Fine Arts in a magnificent architectural.
Built in the 17th century, then enlarged until the late eighteenth, Hôtel-Dieu de Tournus, with three rooms of the sick, is not afraid to compete with that of Beaune.
The Greuze Museum is also situated in the Hotel Dieu and occupies the rest of the buildings.
The landscape painter Jean-Baptiste Greuze in Tournus born in 1725, figure prominently in the collections, including two self-portraits of the artist and a "Study for Septimius Severus and Caracalla" which served for his reception piece to the Academy in 1769, including a very large collection of engravings and original drawings.
The global importance of the artist is evidenced by the presence of his works in major museums around the world including the Louvre, the British Museum, the Albertina in Vienna (Austria) and the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg. For connoisseurs, the works of Greuze alone warrant a trip to Tournus.
The museum also has a collection of paintings and sculptures representing various schools of contemporary art in the 15th. Greuze Museum has received in recent years a large donation of paintings and drawings by great artists both classic and contemporary artists, which are presented in temporary exhibitions.
An archaeological section presents rarities: we note in particular a package of ophthalmologic Gallo-Roman period found in the bed of the Saone.
