Church Notre-Dame du Taur

The Notre-Dame du Taur is located in the historic center of Toulouse between Place du Capitole and the Saint-Sernin basilica.

The current building was built between the fourteenth and sixteenth centuries, rue du Taur, succeeding previous buildings at the site where according to legend, the tortured body of the first bishop of the city, St. Saturninus, would loose the bull dragging him.

Historic Monument in 1840, the church is an example of Southern Gothic and partly owes its fame to the imposing high bell tower 42 m adorning its facade, which appears inserted or embedded in the alignment of the houses.

This bell tower has two levels of boxes and turrets topped by a pediment. The battlements crowning, inside the tower housing a dozen bells. The portal itself, typical of the Gothic, is framed by niches with statues depicting saints.

Enlarged in the fifteenth century, the nave is 40 m long. The woodwork of the seventeenth century that covered its walls were removed and reveal a medieval fresco. There is also a painting evoking the martyrdom of Saturninus signed Jean-Louis Bézard (XIX), a gilded fresco at the altar tracing its history, and a superb black virgin, Notre Dame du Rempart, covered with brocade (cloth embroidered with silver and gold silk).

Finally, note that the church organ, recently renovated, can accommodate concerts.
