The Capitol, located on the place to which he gave his name, is one of the iconic buildings of Toulouse. It now houses the town hall and the city theater.
Its construction was decided in the late twelfth century by the "Capitouls", that is to say the magistrates in charge of municipal power.
Large building in neoclassical façade (XVIII) of stone and red bricks covered with white paint, the Capitol has been redesigned and embellished over the centuries.
In addition to meeting rooms and board, it contains parts and ceremonial galleries including the famous Hall of Illustrious, decorated with paintings and frescoes signed by major artists such as Henri Martin, Jean-Paul Laurens and Paul Gervais (nineteenth and twentieth centuries).
As for the Arcades gallery, it is illustrated with works by Raymond Moretti (twentieth) evoking the history the "pink city".
At the facade itself, plastered in 1988, we see that the central front building were placed eight marble columns to symbolize the eight "capitoulats" of old, and that the three levels totaling 41 windows with wrought iron balconies decorated escutcheon.
The vast building also houses the Capitol Theater since 1818 (which was built in place of a first stage since 1736). It is dedicated to opera and ballet. His Italian-called room can accommodate 1156 spectators.
While at the Capitol, historical monument in 1840, the vast square is decorated with an Occitan cross at the back of the building, there is an old tower, the old tower of the archives, now home of the Tourist Office.
The historic rooms of the Capitol (exhibitions, galleries, stairs of honor, etc.) are open to the public from Monday to Friday and Sunday and public holidays except 25 December and 1 January. Closed Saturday and in case of ceremony. Free admission. Information +33 5 61 22 34 12.
