Small village of Cantal, at 800 meters of altitude, Thiézac takes place in the hollow of the valley of the Cère, dominated by the summits of Elancèze and Puy Gros. It is located about thirty kilometers from Aurillac, not far from Pailherols and Raulhac. The town is also crossed by the 45th parallel north, placing it equidistant from the North Pole and the Earth's equator.
Long focused on agriculture, this mountain village has gradually turned to tourism, thanks to its preserved landscapes and culinary specialties. Lovers of gastronomy will feast with local dishes such as truffles, stuffed cabbages, charcuterie or pie à la tome.
Sports paradise, Thiézac also has an interesting architectural and historical heritage.
Southern Gothic style, the parish church deserves a stop, especially for its altarpiece of the seventeenth century. Not far away, it is possible to admire the Notre-Dame-de-Consolation chapel, a mountain oratory that would have welcomed Queen Anne of Austria. You can enjoy a 17th century altarpiece, a painted ceiling, polychrome frescoes, and forty-six medallions representing symbols of the Litany of the Virgin. Located on the heights of the village, lit at night, this small chapel in good condition has kept a lot of charm and offers a nice panorama of the village. Small paths through the houses of the village can be seen on the way to the chapel.
Located at over 1000 meters altitude, the village of Niervèze houses built around the couderc with a bread oven, a fountain, or water troughs. Completely restored, it allows to appreciate houses of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries with a thatched roof of rye straw. The cottage Granier, a traditional block farm, offers an interesting museum space representing the daily life of a mountain village in Cantal during the last hundred years.
But it is especially for its natural heritage that Thiézac is appreciated by tourists. Large volumes of breaches that occurred 12,000 years ago, we can admire prismatic columns or spooky forms of needles and pyramids.
Do not miss a few hikes to the Aisse pass, the Faillitoux waterfall or Malbec and Roucole, or in the heart of the Gorge de la Cère.
The town of Thiézac is also crossed by the hiking trail, GR 400, the Tour of the upper valley of the Cère by the crest paths.
