Thézan-lès-Béziers is a commune in the Hérault department, in the Occitanie region, 12 km northwest of Béziers.
Its territory of 13 km² is bordered to the west by the course of the Orb, whose valley is classified as a natural area of ecological interest for its flora and fauna.
Between the sea (to the south) and the Cévennes (to the north), the locality has an ever green character with nearly 60% of cultivated land (including a good part of vines), and 20% of various agricultural and natural areas (including some forest plots).
Appeared in the Middle Ages, Thézan was a seigneury dependent on the Viscounty of Béziers. The inhabitants were excommunicated in 1221 during the Albigensian Crusade. In 1287, the seigniorial castle was fortified by order of the king, but the site was soon sold and then bought back in 1301 by the population to protect themselves from the armed bands that ravaged the region... During the Wars of Religion, these ramparts were reinforced.
Moreover, over the centuries, the place of the vineyard has developed. Activity is still one of the strengths of Thézan, which has some 3,000 inhabitants. This active town is worth the detour for its heritage and its hilly and bucolic countryside. Near Béziers, a charming stopover during a stay in Languedoc…
In terms of heritage, Thézan has retained a historic center with real cachet. Indeed, the dwellings have developed in a circular fashion around the old seigniorial castle (the site of the Bastille, but only a few fortified sections of the castle itself remain) and the church. What was the medieval heart at the top of a hill overlooking the Orb is still dotted with alleys and dead ends. And we distinguish at the level of certain dwellings of the old elements (sometimes dating from the Middle Ages) which add to the picturesque.
It is revealed when visiting the parish church of Saint-Pierre and Saint-Paul, the foundations of which date back to the 10th century (it was then the castle chapel): it was remodeled after the Wars of Religion and then at the beginning of the 19th century (its Roman style chevet was then restructured). The building houses two virgins in gilded wood from the 17th and 19th centuries. The facade and the stained glass windows were restored and enhanced in the 1990s.
Below the old village, a new district has developed around an imposing town hall erected in 1900.
Another site contributes to the notoriety of the small town: Thézan was indeed the first town in France to decide to erect a monument to the memory of its fallen soldiers during the First World War... The vote of the municipal council took place on December 24, 1914 after the announcement of the death of two soldiers from the village. The construction was however carried out once peace returned. The monument is decorated with a statue of the sculptor Magrou, and it is surrounded by a wrought iron gate made by a local craftsman.
To close this discovery of the heritage, the domain of Aspiran Ravanes should be mentioned: today a wine-growing estate, there are preserved remains of a spring and a Roman well as well as an old chapel whose bases would predate the year one thousand. The domain is private.
On the culture side, the local media library regularly schedules events (exhibitions, meetings, readings): contact +33 4 67 32 67 09.
Then make way for "nature" leisure: the course of the Orb which is joined in the town by one of its tributaries, the Taurou, is pleasant to apprehend from its banks, in summer (but it regularly comes out of its bed in winter). From the plain, there are several hills ("pechs"), including that of the old village. On another, the pech de Laval, an orientation table has been set up. Finally, another, simply called "the pech", is planted with trees and dotted with spaces where generations of Thézan children played adventurers...
This countryside and these hillsides planted with vines as well as the banks of the 'Orb can give rise to walks or hikes: one can also consider loops and itineraries heading towards the first Cévennes reliefs (the foothills of the western and southern part of the massif) or on the contrary towards Béziers and the Mediterranean coast.

For fishing enthusiasts, the Orb and the few ponds that border it in the town are excellent training grounds ! Inquire with the local association on +33 6 67 14 92 22.
The third weekend of June, feast of the town with fun, gourmet entertainment, concerts and balls.
