Tavernes is a village in the Var, in the Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur region, 27 km north of Brignoles, on the borders of the Alpes de Haute-Provence.
The territory of 31 km² is formed by an agricultural plain where the cultivation of olive trees and vineyards dominate, dominated in the north by hills that announce the Verdon and Pre-Alps.
Former medieval stronghold passed under the domination of different seigniories over the centuries, the village has preserved many heritage elements of this period.
Now with nearly 1,400 inhabitants, commercial and lively town but still faithful to its agricultural wealth (Var wine hills, olive oil), Tavernes is a step or even a place of interest near the gorges du Verdon north and one hour drive from the beaches of the Mediterranean.
Authentic Provençal village, Tavernes has preserved some elements of its medieval past: vestiges of enclosures and a defensive door ogival shape, for example, but also some noble houses of the sixteenth century. In general, we admire the beautifully decorated doors of the old houses in the center of the town. Note that many have kept a well, either in the garden or sometimes in the same housing...
Tavernes also has a square belfry surmounted by a cylindrical campanile dating from the eighteenth century.
On the religious level, the parish church dedicated to St. Cassian was rebuilt in the nineteenth century and is surmounted by a modern bell tower. We will notice the beautifully crafted altarpiece. But it is the chapel Notre-Dame-de-Bellevue, overlooking the village to the north, about 3 km, accessible by a pleasant path, which combines architecture and nature hike! Built in 1642 on the hill of Buisse, it shelters an interesting way of cross, dotted with oratories. We enjoy from this site a beautiful panorama. Near the chapel, an old circular keep remodeled in the seventeenth century completes the ensemble. A little walk and bordering on neighboring towns of Fox-Amphoux and Montmeyan, facing the Pre-Alps, the site of the Three Crosses, former place of procession, also offers remarkable points of view. An orientation table has been installed.
Outside this route, other hiking trails starting or including Tavernes are possible, which may include the forest of Gros Bois in the north of the territory, the banks of the aptly named Crayfish Creek or the olive groves and plots of vines. Be careful, some trails may have difficulty in relief. Documentation and information on +33 4 94 18 59 60 and +33 4 98 05 36 36.
