The Musée de l'Oeuvre Notre-Dame is located near the cathedral of Strasbourg and the Palais Rohan, former residence of the prince-bishops.
It is housed in a group of houses dating from the 14th to the 16th century, including the headquarters of the Oeuvre Notre-Dame, the revenues of which are used exclusively for the restoration of the cathedral.
The museum collection was created in 1931 and has been open to the public since the 1950s. Its collections are dedicated to Rhine art from the early Middle Ages until the annexation of Alsace to the kingdom de France, in 1681.
Strasbourg was indeed one of the most important artistic centers of the Germanic Empire from the 13th to the 16th century.
In a unique setting (the buildings are dotted with rich interior decorations, courtyards and gardens in Gothic style), some 1,500 works are exhibited. Elements of statuary from the cathedral stand alongside masterpieces of Rhine art from the 15th and 16th centuries.
