Located in the heart of the enclosure of the episcopal college of the same name, in the historic center of Strasbourg, the Saint-Étienne church was built in the course of the 8th century by Duke Adalbert d'Alsace on the remains of a Roman basilica from 5th century, the remains of which can be admired in the crypt.
Entirely rebuilt in the first half of the 13th century in an elegant Romano-Gothic style, it was deprived of its bell tower and was then transformed into an auditorium from the beginning of the 19th century. Largely destroyed by the Allied bombings of 1944, the building only retains the original vaulted transept with its triple apse.
