Commune of the Great East, Soultz-Haut-Rhin takes place in the department of Haut-Rhin, in Alsace. With more than 7,300 inhabitants, it is located twenty kilometers from Mulhouse and about thirty kilometers from Colmar, in the heart of the Regional Natural Park of Ballons des Vosges. The city was built around a source of salt water that gave it its name.

Founded in the 7th century, Soultz-Haut-Rhin is incorporated in the Upper Mundat in the second half of the 11th century. Property of the Bishop of Strasbourg until 1789 and the French Revolution, the town was also in the thirteenth century a high fief of the Knights of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem.

From its rich hours, the city of Soultz-Haut-Rhin has retained an important architectural heritage that is still possible to admire today.

Things to see and do

Listed as a historic monument, the Saint-Maurice church dates from the 13th century. It is possible to admire a mid-18th century historical organ built by Jean-André Silbermann, as well as completely restored choir frescoes.

Built in the course of the nineteenth century, the former synagogue of Soultz-Haut-Rhin is now listed as an historic monument.

Walking through the town, you can admire the ancient beguinage, home of the Beguines, the convent of the Capuchins Saint-Maurice, or the former commandery of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem.

Two museums take place in the town, the first is in the castle of Bucheneck and traces the history of Soultz-Haut-Rhin. The second, the Toy Nave, is dedicated, as its name suggests, to toys of all ages and all ages.

In the historic center of the city, it is possible to appreciate several homes of the sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. You will also be able to see the residence of notable, or the square of the family of Georges-Charles de Heeckeren of Anthès in the communal cemetery. Military and French politician of the nineteenth century, he remained famous for having dueled his brother-in-law, the Russian poet Pushkin.

Just at the entrance of the city, the castle of Jungholtz is a house of the fourteenth century. An important Jewish cemetery surrounds the ruins of this building.

Not far from the Heidentempel, a gothic building, you can admire the Maerzenbrunnen, the source from the heights of Alschwiller.

During a walk in the heart of the Soultz forest, do not miss to admire the Hexenstein, a huge stone dedicated to the worship of the Sun God.
