Sierentz

Tourism, holidays & weekends guide in the Haut-Rhin

Sierentz is a Haut-Rhin commune, in the Grand Est region, a dozen kilometers south-east of Mulhouse.

Belonging to the historical and cultural region of Alsace, its 13 km² territory is located in the Rhine plain, the course of which is only a few kilometers to the east, like the Swiss border. Backing onto the first Sundgau hills, it is 40% occupied by part of the Hardt national forest and 32% by agricultural land.

Already inhabited by humans during the Neolithic period, Sierentz developed before the year 1000 and then belonged to the bishops of Basel. In the 16th century, the city fell under an Austrian lordship before being a stronghold of the Waldner family.

It was not until the twentieth century that the municipality with a hitherto essentially agricultural economy diversified (shops, a few industrial units) and saw its demography boosted thanks to the nearby agglomerations of Mulhouse, Basel and Saint-Louis.

Now counting nearly 3,700 inhabitants, this small town benefits from a green living environment and has a range of leisure activities of interest.

Things to see and do

In terms of heritage, the church of Saint-Martin was built in 1836. It then replaced a medieval building of good size (30 m by 10) whose materials were reused. It houses a 17th century Christ on the cross and a painting of Saint Martin, signed by Sébastien Gutzwiller, an artist from the region. The 17th century organ, whose rococo style buffet bears the date of 1773, comes from the old church and was restored by Callinet.

In the village, a few buildings of noble craftsmanship are to be observed: the old cantonal court dating from 1906 (converted into an associative and leisure center), the hospital (built in 1898) or the old farm known as the Bascule where the harvests were weighed (acquired by the municipality and become a leisure center). Finally, in the rue Roger Haag, a house dating from 1608 in the style characteristic of the region has been preserved. Occupied by the bailiff, it then belonged to noble families whose coats of arms are still visible. Sculpted decorations on the facade and ornate beams seem to compensate for the modesty of the windows.

In general, a walk in the center of the village allows you to admire a number of homes and buildings with traditional Alsatian architecture.

On the cultural level, note that the media library installed in a site recently restored in a contemporary style regularly schedules events (readings, exhibitions, workshops). Information on +33 3 89 83 83 20.

Also note that an association offers cinema screenings every 3rd Tuesday of the month at 8 pm: contact +33 3 89 81 53 84.

For children, there are many children's areas. games have been set up in the center of the town and the surrounding areas (rue des Érables, square des Tisserands, place de la Bascule, rue du Monenberg in particular).

In addition, tennis fans can book a court with the local club (call +33 6 37 49 47 61) and several municipal structures (gymnasium, football fields, bowling alley) are accessible to visitors and holidaymakers. Information on +33 3 89 81 51 11.

In a different genre, fishing enthusiasts can take advantage of the ponds set up in the east of the town, near the motorway linking Mulhouse to Basel. It is advisable to contact the local association on +33 6 23 43 25 81.

Finally, it remains to take advantage of the potential of Sierentz and its close surroundings in terms of hiking: circuits accessible to walkers and cyclists are plotted allowing to discover the charms of the countryside and forest areas. In addition, it is easy from the locality to join the Euro Vélo 15, also known as Véloroute du Rhin, which crosses all of Alsace from Switzerland and towards Germany, for a total of 1300 km.
