The castle of Juis is located in the town of Savigneux, in the department of Ain, a dozen kilometers east of Villefranche-sur-Saône.
Located in the south of the village, the domain is from the 10th century the seat of the seigneury of Juis (named after a local noble family, a representative of whom was Bishop of Mâcon) and a first castle was built before the Year Mil. He passed in the 14th century to the family of La Palud then, successively, to that of Groslée (bailiff of Mâcon) and again to the Duke of Bourbon then to that of Lorraine. In the meantime, a new building has been built.
The set ended up being sold by auction in 1743! On this date, the church still present within the estate had already lost its rank of parish church.
Nowadays, the set listed in the Supplementary Inventory is in the form of a square keep built in brick with a tower in the shape of a pepperbox at one of the angles. On two sides are adjoining dwellings forming an interior courtyard of modest size. The site in its current form, once surrounded by ditches and an enclosure, dates from the 14th century.
The property is always private and does not visit. The silhouette of the castle can mark out a walk in a bucolic setting. Information on +33 4 74 07 27 40.
