Commune of the Loiret, in region Center-Val de Loire, Sandillon takes place in the urban area of Orléans, as well as in the more agricultural region of the Loire Valley. It is about ten kilometers from Orleans, and seven kilometers from Jargeau.
Originally Gallo-Roman, the city of Sandillon was once a villa belonging to the rich Roman, Santillius, who left it its name. It underwent profound modifications following the French Revolution, before experiencing a real expansion in the early twentieth century with the arrival of a secondary railway line from Orleans to Brinon-sur-Sauldre. Sandillon is a former industrial town and home of many Spanish refugees during the civil war era. Today it is known for its architectural and historical heritage.
Built in the second half of the 19th century, the church of Saint-Aignan reveals, among other things, a golden iron shrine of the nineteenth century, two beautiful windows of the same period bearing biblical scenes, as well as a steeple base dating from XIVth century.
Partially listed and classified in the inventory of Historic Monuments, the domain of the Porte presents an eighteenth-century castle, a chapel, and a park. Other castles take place on the commune, such as that of Champvallins of the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries, that of Gamereau of the sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, that of Puchesse of the nineteenth century with a chapel of the seventeenth century, or that of Bardy du XIXth century. The vestiges of the Chateau des Marais, built in the 16th century, can also be observed.
Walking through the commune of Sandillon, you can also discover some old houses such as that of the Petit-Marmagne of the sixteenth century, or that of the Dhiot of the XIXth century. The town also has some old 19th century farms.
One can appreciate the vestiges of the old farmhouse of the Chanoines, former house of Isabelle Devouton, who once belonged to the brother of the famous Joan of Arc.
In the maquis of Samatha, a high place of resistance during the Second World War, a commemorative plaque can be discovered at the precise location of the resistance resist Guy Tressou.
Nature lovers will appreciate the bird island, classified as a special protection area of the Natura 2000 network.
The market is held every Friday and Sunday morning. A Christmas market is also offered in December.
Every year in June, the city organizes a garage sale.
Also in June, the 10 km of the Hexagon is a running race taking place in Sandillon.
Every 1st of November, a fair of the Trees allows to discover an interesting horticultural market.
