Located north of Basse Terre (also called Guadeloupe itself) Sainte-Rose is the largest town in Guadeloupe. This is also the place of landing of the first settlers (Charles Lienard of the Olive and Jean Duplessis Ossonville, Norman gentlemen and lieutenants Esnambuc faithful, having brilliantly illustrated during the conquest of St. Christopher - the current St. -Kitts - then the capital of the new French Antilles Olive had settled but wished to possess an island of its own, not to share with the English)..

Predominantly rural, the town is also facing the sea. Ideal starting point for hikes in the rainforest or along 14 beaches to the next town, and to explore the mangrove islets and barrier coral Grand Cul de Sac Marin.
