Peyre en Aubrac is the name of the new common gathering Aumont-Aubrac, La Chaze-de-Peyre, Saint-Sauveur-de-Peyre, Sainte-Colombe-de-Peyre, Javols and Le Fau-de-Peyre. It is located northwest of the department of Lozere, bordering the scenic granite mountains of Margeride and huge basalt plateau of Aubrac. The origins of Aumont-Aubrac are obscure. According to the first known documents, the village already existed around the year thousand and is formed around a priory founded by the Barons of Peyre. In the Middle Ages, the village extended from the church to the current town hall. The modern town developed along the N9. In August 2002, Aumont-Aubrac was the 12th village in France to get the "Village étape" label and the second on the A75 after Massiac.
