Courtilloles Castle is located in the former town of Saint-Rigomer-des-Bois, in the Sarthe, 10 km south-east of Alençon.
It was built from 1754 on the foundations of a previous main building badly damaged by fire and finally demolished. Only the dovecote including 850 boulins (nesting boxes) was preserved.
The new castle was built in a neoclassical style, according to a rectangular plan, equipped at each end with a roofed pavilion with balusters. On the side of the main courtyard, twin pavilions (one of which houses a chapel) are visible, and a staircase with a balustraded balcony precedes a peristyle. The west wing dates from 1865.
The park gate also dates from the 18th century.
The whole area overlooks the Perseigne forest and the Alençon plain.
Partly protected as historical monuments, the castle has remained in the same family until recently. The property with its neat interiors is open to visitors only by appointment or, more occasionally, especially during Heritage Days. Information on +33 1 45 55 28 50.
