In the Provence hills, the chic little town of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence is very well popular with artists and key figures for its charming boulevards lined with plane trees, its pretty narrow streets, its shops, its cafés and restaurants, and its République square, very lively during market days.

Outside of the city is the Antiques plateau, the ancient town of Glanum. Beautiful Roman remains there include the mausoleum (18 metres in height), the municipal arch and the field of ancient ruins comprising temples, a forum, thermal baths, and an ornamental lake.

The Saint-Paul-de-Mausole monastery, hospice since the 18th century, is famous for having welcomed Vincent Van Gogh. Inspired by surrounding nature, the painter produced some of his most famous works there, such as the Sunflowers (Les Tournesols) and the Cypress (Les Cyprès).

Saint-Rémy-de-Provence

Saint-Rémy-de-Provence is the heart of Provence, very easily accessible, 20 km from Avignon TGV station and close to Marseille-Provence international airport, rich in charming accommodation. Saint-Rémy-de-Provence is ideally located for visiting Provence.

Discovering Saint-Rémy-de-Provence also means admiring the magnificent landscapes of the Alpilles massif classified as "Alpilles Regional Natural Park".

The city's rich historical past is still visible. First called Glanum, it was Hellenized then Roman city. Destroyed during the barbarian invasions, it was rebuilt 1 km further north. In the Middle Ages, Saint-Rémy prospered and was equipped with ramparts then became a rich city endowed with many beautiful private mansions during the Renaissance period which saw the birth of Nostradamus there. It was mainly oriented towards agriculture and in the 19th century industrial crops led to the prosperity of many bourgeois families of peasant traders. Soon the city was attracting artists, writers and musicians. Vincent van Gogh who stayed there from May 1889 to May 1890, seduced by the light and the landscapes, painted nearly 150 canvases there. Since then, the charm of Saint-Rémy has not ceased to operate.

Many gourmet products are produced here, such as candied fruit and very famous olive oil, wine and fruits and vegetables known for their taste qualities. You will find these products on the famous Provençal market of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, every Wednesday morning.

Traditions are also well preserved there with the Arlesian costume, votive festivals, Frédéric Mistral, the carts of Saint Eloi and the release of bulls accompanied by their Camargue herdsmen.
