The Agay lighthouse, also known as the Baumette lighthouse, is located in the seaside resort of Agay, which belongs to the municipality of Saint-Raphaël, in the Var, at the foot of the Estérel massif.
The lighthouse was built in 1884, and has a square shape surmounting a main building. 17 m high, it rises above sea level by almost 30 m.
Positioned on the point of Baumettes which partly closes the harbor of Agay, its range is approximately 27 km.
The lighthouse, renovated in 1968, is now automated and controlled from the Porquerolles station.
A stele has been fitted out at its base in memory of the writer and aviator Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. On July 31, 1944, while joining his unit in Corsica, the author of The Little Prince would have flown over the villa of his brother-in-law, the count of Agay, then the lighthouse, which would have been the last building seen by the pilot. Some time later, it was damaged in the sea.
