Things to see and do

Installed on a rocky outcrop since the 13th century, the Château de la Roche combines a warlike aspect and a romantic allure to the delight of its visitors. Emblematic site of the department, it stands proudly on the banks of the Loire, on the calm waters of Lake Villerest since the creation of the dam in the early 1980s.

Work of the first lords of La Roche, it is presented in initially in the form of a charming fortified house surrounded by thick walls. Dilapidated and uninhabitable in the 18th century, it completely changed its appearance two centuries later with the construction of a granite dike which replaced the drawbridge. Embellished with a classic wing in the mid-18th century, it was subsequently restored in an elegant Gothic style by one of its owners, Paul Roustan, an industrialist from Roanne. Very popular with visitors, the Château de la Roche now hosts a large number of events including dramatized tours, an escape game or even corporate seminars by reservation.

Surrounding the castle with grace and enchantment, Lake Villerest was born from a dam built in the 1980s. It is the subject of very beautiful walks with family or friends in summer.
